Honeycomb is a delicious wonder of nature created by honeybees. It is a perfectly structured hexagonal structure constructed out of natural beeswax and it's one of the most functional parts of the honeybee hive. Honeycomb structures are employed in a variety of engineering and scientific fields.
Honeycomb is utilized by the hive for three reasons for three reasons: as a nursery in which to help raise new bees; as a place to store and transform pollen into "beebread"; and, finally, for a long-term storage of nectar. When a hive swarms the bees begin an entirely new hive with the honeycomb foundation.
Bees make honeycombs by vibrating their flight muscles to produce heat that softens the beeswax plates that they secrete from their abdomens. They then form the softened wax into cylinder shapes and connect them to adjacent cells on each side. This arrangement is extremely constant, which indicates that it's not the result of a blind physical force but a well-organized pattern of construction behavior. It's also a striking example of convergent evolution - an instance in which the same pattern emerges in closely related species.
