1. Roomba Q5 Pro

The Q5 Pro, and its more expensive sibling the Q7 Max Series are among the most powerful robotic vacuums that we have tested. They are equipped with top-of-the-line motors which can generate up to 5,500 Pascals of suction force. As with other top iRobot models (including the top choice) they employ intelligent mapping technology to create precise floor plans and eliminate home-based obstacles like cords and furniture legs. The robots also feature a feature called Carpet Boost that increases its power when it detects dirt on the carpet.

Both the Q5 as well as the Q7 Max Series get very excellent scores in our tests on floors that are bare and are particularly effective in removing pet hair. There are some issues, however, that prevent them from being our first option. One of them is that the Q5's navigation doesn't feature AI-powered obstacle avoidance technology, so it's prone to get caught up in shoes and socks, and is unable to navigate tight spaces very well in our tests. Also, it doesn't have cameras that let it see the corners of an area.

It's still a good deal, especially if your home or office has a lot of unfinished floors and you're looking to save some money. It's also very quiet and can be used while you're at work, or at school. It's not equipped with the edge-to-edge floor vacuuming that is offered in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. And it's less effective at mopping, relying on disposable wet wipes, which don't stick on for long and don't take on dried-on debris. The Q5 has self-emptying docks, however. If you need to, the mopping pad can be replaced with one that is wet in just a few minutes.

2. iRobot Roomba X30

The app lets you customize zones and change the cleaning schedule. Its battery life is average compared to other models.

If the X30 Ultra is in a carpeted space, you can tell it to pull back and extend its mops. This will help prevent cross-contamination. Its flex arm can also be utilized to reach under furniture with low levels and along baseboards. It's not as efficient on the washboard as our other Editors' Choice Picks, the Ecovacs Ozmo N8Pro+ and the iRobot Combo j9+.

During tests, the X30 Ultra was the fastest robot vacuum/mop to complete an entire house, finishing with the battery at 66 percent left. It also did a good job of cleaning a mix of rooms and floors with various flooring types, such as some area rugs. Its obstacle detection was top-of-the-line and it was nimbly avoiding fake dog socks, turds, shoes and cables.

It's more expensive than the iRobot Combo v9+ and iRobot Roomba j9+, however, it comes with superior suction, a built-in dust bin that automatically empties into its base, and it supports voice commands via Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It's the only robotic mop or vacuum that scored a perfect 10 in our evaluations thanks to a blend of high-tech sensors, which include cameras, a structured lighting system and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could refill and empty its basestation in a self-contained manner. It also boasted an industry-leading suction of 12,000Pa as well as self-cleaning mop mops.

The X40 as with other iRobot products, is simple to operate. It comes with an easy mobile application interface and is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only drawback is that it's still quite loud, which can be problematic if you run it in the morning before work or at night as you attempt to sleep.

It's also quite expensive, though it's not as expensive as Ecovacs X2 Omni or the Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra both of which are equally capable and more attractive. If you're willing to live with a bit more noise and some extra cost it's a powerful two-in-one that will please almost everyone.

This lets you inform the robot of which area of your home needs to be cleaned by using the app or voice control. If you have a lot of furniture, a stair mode is also a good option. Also the recharge and resume function that lets your robot vacuum continue where it left off is ideal for busy families.

The RX3 is a more efficient cleaner than you would expect from its price tag. It's a pro at cleaning, removing 55% of debris in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mopses using a single pad and a rotating motion that cleans better that most of the robot mop cleaners that we've tried. It's also highly self-sufficient, with a full-featured app and a self-emptying base that is washable.

The well-designed iRobot application guides you through an initial mapping session that collects data about your floorplan and any "no-go" areas you have marked on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules or set up an automatic spot-clean. It can also be used to it to prioritize the most soiled areas for better performance.
