Both the Q5 and Q7 Max Series get very high scores on our bare floor tests and are particularly effective at cleaning pet hair. However, they do have a few flaws that keep them from being our top choice. One of the flaws of the Q5 is that its navigation system does not feature AI-powered obstacles avoidance. It's therefore prone to getting stuck on shoes and socks, and it couldn't navigate densely packed rooms very well during our tests. It also doesn't come with a camera to look around corners.

However, it's a good choice, especially if you want to save money on an Roomba from iRobot and have a mostly unfinished home or office. Plus, it's very quiet and can be used when you're at work or at school. It lacks the edge-to-edge bare floor vacuuming feature that's offered by the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. And it's less effective at mopping, relying on disposable wet wipes that don't hold on well and aren't able to handle dried-on debris. The Q5 is self-emptying cradle however. If you're in need of it clean the mopping pad, it can be swapped for a wet one in minutes.

2. iRobot Roomba

The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive mopping and vacuuming into an elegant, compact package. Its nimble navigation and intelligent cleaning maps make it easy to clean and efficient in tackling larger particles like pet hair. It also has strong suction and an automatic bin for emptying. It's the most efficient robot hoover for carpets, but it's not as effective as some rivals in deep cleaning.

This high-performing mop and vacuum combo uses advanced sensor technology to dodge obstacles and pet waste, and it will learn the layout of your home over time to ensure more efficient cleaning. The app allows you to modify zones and alter the cleaning schedule. Its battery life is average when compared to other models.

If the X30 Ultra is in a carpeted area, you can instruct it to pull back and extend its mop. This can help avoid cross contamination. Its flex arm is perfect for getting under low-lying furniture and along baseboards. It doesn't offer the same level of washboard performance as our other Editors' Choice picks, the Ecovacs Deebot Ozmo N8 Professional+ and the iRobot Combo j9+.

It did a good cleaning job on a variety of flooring and rooms with different flooring types including certain area rugs. Its obstacle detection was top-notch, and it nimbly avoided fake dog turds, socks, shoes, and bundles of cables.

It's more expensive than the iRobot Combo v9+ and iRobot Roomba j9+, but it has superior suction, a built-in dust bin that automatically emptys into its base, and it supports voice commands through Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can even clean the floor after it vacuums, a feature that we haven't seen in other robot vacuum/mop combos.

3. iRobot Roomba X40

It's one of our most attractive robot vacuums. The newest model from iRobot happens to be its smartest and has advanced features like enhanced dirt detection technology and future compatibility with Matter (another company's robot that can wash its own mop pads).

It's also the sole robot vacuum/mop to score an absolute 10 out of 10 in our testing. This is thanks to the combination of high-tech sensors, including a structured lighting system, a camera, and a variety of lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot in our tests that can completely self-refill and empty its base station and it boasts the industry's highest suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mop pads.

The X40 is, like the other iRobot products, is simple to operate. It has an easy mobile application interface and is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only downside is that the X40 is still a loud unit. This can be a problem in the mornings prior to work or during the night when you are trying to sleep.

It's also a bit costly but not as much as the Ecovacs MaxV Ultra or the Roborock S8 Omni, which are equally capable and better looking. This is a two-in-one vacuum that's extremely powerful however, it's going to cost you more and create more noise.

iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop with many advanced features that let you get rid of your chores. Similar to Ecovacs' range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-off cleaning machine that can take care of both mopping and vacuuming. It comes with a multifunction dock that automatically emptys the vacuum's dust bin, fills its water tank, and washes and dry the mop pads.

The smart robot vacuum cleaner best makes use of an array of LIDAR and structured light to map out the floor plan and detect obstacles, navigating more intelligently than its more expensive rivals. It also comes with a front-mounted camera for real-time detection of hazards but this wasn't foolproof in our tests and could be confused with power cords or obstructions.

Its vacuum cleaner has a maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to do the job. It also has a feature known as "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates the power of the vacuum and adjusts cleaning frequency for different areas in the home based on how dirty those areas tend to be.

If you have a bigger home, you should consider selecting a model with a the option of cleaning zones or spots. This allows you to inform the robot of which area of your home needs to be cleaned by using the app or voice command. A stairway mode is useful if you own a number of furniture. iRobot RX3

The RX3 is more intelligent than its price would suggest. It is a good vacuum cleaner and picked up 55% debris in our tests. (It was second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mopses using one pad and a reciprocating movement which is cleaner than the majority of the mop cleaners with robots that we've tried. It's self-sufficient too, with a full-featured application and an auto-emptying washable base.

The well-designed iRobot application guides you through a mapping exercise that collects information about your floorplan and any "no-go" areas you have marked on the map. You can use it to create cleaning schedules, arrange an area for cleaning or to prioritize your most filthy rooms to ensure better performance. The app also gives access to a host of features like seasonal suggestions, custom maps, and advanced settings for your cleaning.

It can also reach corners and under furniture more easily because its shape is more rectangular. It is equipped with an impressive 8000 Pascal suction as well as clever combs for removing pet hair. You can also set up a spot-clean that thoroughly cleans the area.

The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD is a sleeker more affordable alternative to iRobot Roomba. It is more appealing in its design, similar to Dolce & Gabbana. The twin cameras are shaped like cute little eyes. It does a good job vacuuming but is more prone to getting caught on low thresholds and is a bit more noisy than the other top robot vacuums we've tried. It also has a less user-friendly app and a tiny base station that can't be used as a bin for emptying.
