Study of Chinese Learners' Pedagogical Choices in Korean

This article reviews all local practical research on Korean up to 2020. It focuses on pragmatic fundamental topics like:

Discourse Construction Tests (DCTs)

The discourse completion test is a common tool in pragmatic research. It has many strengths but it also has a few drawbacks. The DCT, for example, does not take into account individual and cultural differences. Additionally it is also the case that the DCT is prone to bias and may cause overgeneralizations. This is why it must be carefully analyzed prior to using it for 프라그마틱 research or for assessment purposes.

Despite its limitations, the DCT is a useful tool for investigating the relationship between prosody and information structure in non-native speakers. The participants were 46 CLKs of upper-intermediate who participated in MQs, DCTs and RIs. They were also asked to think about their evaluations and refusal performance in RIs. The results showed that CLKs are more likely to defy native Korean pragmatic norms. The MQ data was first analyzed to determine the participants' practical choices. The data were classified according to Ishihara (2010)'s definition of pragmatic resistance. Then, the selections were matched with their linguistic performance in DCTs to determine if they were a reflection of pragmatic resistance or not. Additionally, the participants were asked to justify their decision to use pragmatic language in a specific scenario.

The results of the MQs and DCTs were then analyzed using descriptive statistics and z-tests. It was found that CLKs often resorted to the use of euphemistic phrases such as "sorry" and "thank you." They were asked to perform the DCTs in their first language and to complete the MQs in either their L1 or L2.
