Pragmatic Free Trial Meta is a non-commercial open data platform and infrastructure that facilitates research on pragmatic trials. It collects and distributes clean trial data, ratings, and evaluations using PRECIS-2. This allows for diverse meta-epidemiological analyses that compare treatment effect estimates across trials of different levels of pragmatism.
Background
Pragmatic studies provide real-world evidence that can be used to make clinical decisions. It is important to remember that a study that is pragmatic does not necessarily mean a low-quality study. In fact, there is an increasing number of clinical trials which use the term 'pragmatic' either in their abstracts or titles (as defined by MEDLINE, but that is not precise nor sensitive). Pragmatic trials also have advantages, including the ability to use existing data sources, and a greater chance of detecting significant differences than traditional trials. However, they may still have limitations which undermine their effectiveness and generalizability. For instance the rates of participation in some trials might be lower than expected due to the healthy-volunteer effect and financial incentives or competition for participants from other research studies (e.g. industry trials). Practical trials are often restricted by the need to recruit participants in a timely manner.
