Items that have weak bases, like rings, can be upgraded into more robust bases. Items with bases that are strong, such as Titans from eth, have no changes in their stats.
Upgrade components
Upgrade components can be slotted into trinkets, weapons, armor and gathering tools, providing an attribute bonus or additional impact when the equipment is used. They can be bought from vendors, or found in loot, thrown away by enemies or received as a reward from missions or chests. Certain upgrades can also be equipped with special cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require that the equipment be at a specific level to upgrade.
To upgrade the quality of a weapon or piece armor, the user must choose it and click on the Upgrade button in the toolbar. This will display on the right-hand side of the screen a preview showing the expected upgrade stats as well as the necessary component or materials.
There are three types of upgrade components that are universal upgrades, prefix upgrades, and suffix upgrades. Universal upgrades, which are made up of gems, can be placed in any type of equipment and provide smaller bonuses than upgrade components that are type-restricted. Infusions are only placed in ascended gear and legendary equipment are exactly the same as jewels but have higher bonuses and are not able to be placed in any other equipment. Suffix upgrades can be added to gathering tools. They add a suffix at the end of item level upgrade names. In the case of upgrades for gathering tools If a player replaces one glyph with another the old glyph will be returned to the inventory. However, replacing any other upgrade component will destroy it, excluding the inscriptions that can be swapped.
Leveling
Path of Exile's upgrade system differs from previous versions in some important ways. Gear is now divided into tracks and items can be upgraded a certain number of times before being "leveled out." The cost of upgrading increases with each level, however the materials required for upgrades do not. This allows players to focus their efforts on a few essential items and maximize their impact, rather than spreading out the cost of upgrades across several items.

Reroll tokens are obtained by recycling upgraded items. These tokens can then be used to upgrade the original item or an item of the same type. Recyclable items have a level gauge that shows how much of the upgrade gauge has been filled. The amount of level that has been filled depends on the rarity and upgrade cost of the item upgrader mod.
In the past, some upgrade items were affixed with priority that made them easier to roll for than others. This meant that you could receive the stats that mattered most to your build more often than other. Players can also verify the upgrade requirements for specific items at the Cyrodiil Golden vendor or Leaderboard.
In general, armor and weapons have higher value when they are fully updated. Upgrades to gold are recommended for weapons with spells or glyphs that damage weapons. This will bring about a significant improvement in their performance. Weapons with an upgraded appearance will also benefit from this because its defense will increase as it moves from purple to gold.
