World of Warcraft Item Upgrades

Upgrades to items can be used to increase the stats of a particular item. Depending on the type of upgrade you choose, it can boost the rarity of an item or mark Level and increase other stats.

Upgrading equipment in The War Within requires a set number of Flightstones and Crests, and each item has an upgrade item track. Each upgrade increases the cost of the following one by a set amount.

Item Level

When an item upgrader kit gets upgraded, its basic stats improve in value. This value is the sum of the perks that are leveled up (attack magic attack and defense). Upgrades can be costly, dependent on who you employ and what you do. This is due to the fact that many perks must be replaced to allow the item to be upgraded.

Item level is a popular measure of power, and is visible on all item tooltips. It can also be used to determine a gating condition when queueing for dungeons, raids and scenarios, and to limit the amount of PvP gear players can wear (since PvP is restricted to an lower level). The average level of an item can be found on the character sheet.

The level of an item can help players evaluate the strength of equipment when deciding to purchase or sell. It's a good indicator of the quality of an item and the amount of damage it's capable of causing. Comparing items in the inventory of a seller can be done using the level of the item.

On PC, you are able to see the level of the item by pressing ALT or by using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will show the item's full description, including the ilvl. It can also be found by hovering over an item with the mouse cursor, and then entering /itemlevel into chat.

There are various theories about how the calculation of the item's level is done. One theory suggests that the item level is determined by an equation that determines how valuable an item's stats really are. It takes into consideration that different perks are valued differently, and that gems in the sockets increase the item's value. This can result in an item's ilvl which is calculated and is often very close to Blizzards actual item level.

However, this isn't the only factor which can affect an item's ilvl because the level of the area the item was dropped in could change the value of its stats, for example by adding an additional level to its crit rating or haste rating. This means that items that drop at higher levels will have higher ilvl than those from lower-level instances.

Item Stats

The item's stats can make or break an item for players. The game utilizes them in many ways to encourage players not to restrict themselves to a particular weapon and to encourage players to experiment with other weapons. The base stats on a weapon are boosted by the weapon's stat mods that are in turn enhanced by the player's level.

The upgrades to items add by increasing certain stats of the item. The rarity of an item determines its upgrade cost. A grey or white item for instance, will only be upgraded one time and items with rare tiers can be upgraded multiple times at higher prices.

Affixes are another way to alter the stats of an item. They are stat boosts that can be added by the player to an item. The affixes could do things like give the item extra damage, or add a unique ability to the item (such as reviving the dead or reducing the cooldowns), or make the item upgrading unique by putting a special name to the item.

Currently, all affixes can be modified by selecting them in the upgrade window and pressing the green button with the arrows that circle. This will cost a certain amount in gold and items. These can be used as upgrade gauges similar to other methods of rerolling.

Players can upgrade an item by a specific stat, or reroll attaches. The possible stat ranges of an item are based on the level of the item, but every item is guaranteed to have at least 1 stat within the specified range, unless it is an exclusive item or an item that is a God roll from a raid boss.

This is another thing that can be modified by adding an option to upgrade the equipment without having to reroll the affixes or choosing which stats to increase. But as with base equipment, this would need to be performed on a per-item basis, and the interface for item comparison wouldn't show all possible stats either lost or gained at the same time.

Item Luck

The Luck stat for a player adds up to increase the likelihood of item discoveries, the properties spawned on loot drops and the intensity of the properties. However, it doesn't directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives the player a possibility to obtain better gear in earlier waves and is therefore more beneficial in the early game than later ones because most players value higher weapon scaling and defenses over damage gains.

Luck can also increase the chance of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This is not to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade chance, which increases with each level and can be further enhanced by using an anti-material, such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.

Weapons, shields, and armor can be made or spawn with the Luck property, which has a default value of 40. These items can then be enhanced by golden ingots, spined leather or oak boards (depending on the item's material type) to give +40 Luck or to boost the luck of an item up to 140.

Certain items, like the Hollow-infused weapon can also be outfitted to increase the damage dealt by any ability that causes damage by 5%. These items can be found in the shop or created by using the appropriate ingredients.

Item Failure

Item upgrades are expensive and not every upgrade item will be successful. However, there are cash shop items that allow players to boost their chance of success or stop them from losing an item in the event that the upgrade fails.

When you upgrade an item the success rate is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the chance of completing the upgrade successfully, and can be enhanced by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. The percentage of success can only be increased as much, and the chance that an upgrade will fail can't exceed 100%..

The performance of an can be affected by the luck of that item. All items have a success rate of 25%, and every item with Luck increases the chance of success by five percent.

Note that upgrades to items are rendered above the inventory items therefore enchantment glints and other effects could be masked by them. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
