Choosing a Baby Crib

The process of designing a nursery is an exciting time, however picking a crib is one of the most crucial choices you'll make. The crib that your baby sleeps in will have a significant impact on their development and health, whether it is the style of the slats or mattress height.

Remember that bolts and nails can be loose in time, so be sure to check your crib hardware regularly. Be sure to avoid placing your crib near drapes or window blinds that hang down, which could pose a strangulation hazard for your baby.

Size

Size is an important factor to consider when purchasing a crib. The crib should be large enough to accommodate a sleepy baby, but compact enough for you to be able to reach them easily and care for them. It should also be durable enough to stand up to the wear tots and cots tear of daily use.

The majority of cribs are constructed out of metal or wood, and most have the slatted sides. These features let caregivers observe the baby from different angles and promote airflow. Cribs are available until your child is of two.

Most cribs are equipped with a mattress support height that can be lowered or raised as your baby grows. The lowest setting is best crib for newborn for babies. The highest setting is ideal for babies who are able to sit up or crawl. Make sure you measure the interior of your crib to make sure the mattress will fit, as the slatted design of most cribs may leave small gaps that could pose a danger for your baby.

Some manufacturers offer non-standard cribs and mattresses that meet the same safety standards as standard cribs. These include portable infant beds, bassinets, and play yards. These cribs are smaller than standard ones and come with solid or mesh sides.

If you decide to purchase a non-standard crib, review the manufacturer's guidelines for mattress size guidelines. There may be specific requirements that are different from the standard crib size of 52 inches long and 28 inches wide. You should also examine the space between the crib mattress and the crib to make sure it's not more than one inch. This is the maximum safe distance.

A waterproof cover can protect your baby's mattress from spills and accidents. Choose a cover with an antimicrobial layer that helps to reduce bacteria, and a hypoallergenic layer that eliminates allergens.

If you're considering a crib that has drop-sides, know that they have been associated with 32 infant deaths between 2000 and 2010, and have been banned in the US in 2011. Even if you intend to buy or receive a drop-side baby crib, make sure to remove it when your child is 35 inches or is able to climb out.

Safety

A crib for your baby is the most recommended cribs secure place for your child. It's not just a place to rest but also a place to be able to see them and hold them frequently. There are a variety of crib models and brands on the market. However, they all must meet certain safety standards. These standards are set forth by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, and they make sure the cribs you purchase are safe for your baby.

Before putting your child in the crib, make sure it is clean and free of dander and dust. Also, remove any toys or stuffed animals that might fall out of the crib. Also, don't use any pillows or blankets in the crib; these can cause death by suffocation. Use a fitted sheet and a mattress cover.

Some commenters suggested cribs should conform to formaldehyde emissions standards set forth in the Formaldehyde Standards for Wood Products Act. L. 112-199) and that cribs made of composite wood should be inspected for conformity. Although these regulations are not directly applicable to cribs however, the CPSC has determined that it is appropriate to require that cribs and other furniture made from composite wood meet the requirements of this important new law.

Some commenters suggested that a requirement that fasteners be tightened after dynamic tests should be added to the new crib standard. This suggestion is not a good idea for us. The dynamic tests - the shake test and the vertical mattress support impact test are designed to mimic and speed up the use and abuse of cribs by children. The loose screw is the second leading cause of crib deaths.

Other comments were based upon the EWS incident data. The data shows that the most frequent hazards associated with cribs are drop-sides and unsafe mattresses. We therefore decided to focus on these concerns in the rulemaking process and to incorporate the performance standards that are currently included in the current mandatory standard through reference. By incorporating by reference, we can ensure that crib safety is maintained consistently and efficiently.

Additionally, the mattress must fit comfortably inside the crib's opening. This is because any gaps between the crib and the mattress can cause infants' arms and legs to get caught in the crib. Many cribs include stabilizer bars to help keep the mattress in place. If your crib does not come with stabilizer bars, then you'll need to purchase a mattress pad to provide additional support.

A great crib also has a low sitting mattress level that helps keep toddlers from stepping over the crib's edge. A good crib will include a mattress support that is strong and secure, and can be adjusted to four different positions depending on the baby's height. It must also be low enough to let you reach into and out easily, especially in the case of children under 5'5. Some cribs have posts that extend higher than 1 8 inches above the opening of the mattress that could cause your child to be trapped as they play or try to climb.

Some cribs come with attached changing areas that can make diapering easier and faster. They are useful, but they take up more space than traditional cribs. They may not be the best option for smaller nurseries.
