How to Replace an audi q3 key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is situated on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the outside of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the location of the camshaft in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of a chain stretch or a jump in the chain link of the upper chain. The code won't appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult because there are two connector pins and they have different functions however the best way to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully operational, it should read about 1000 ohms. Look for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll i had massive power loss as if the engine was running out of gas or injectors aren't firing anymore. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, 3 were drenched in gazoline, the fourth was dry. When i crank the engine without sparks i put tissue on top of each injector hole and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline pop out, but the 4th one stays shut. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I get 0ohm. I assume that the problem is in another location.

I also tried to reset PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it is running fine with the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem continues to occur at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when unplugged, still shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not sure what to do, but i feel i have pretty much ruled out everything else. But i'm worried that i might have missed something. Let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is the same as the G4 and both function in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a junkyard or from a parts store. It is simple to test them - just switch your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing upwards). They should be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that must know the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make decisions about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If either of these goes wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner which can cause the engine to shut down.

Some of the symptoms of a malfunctioning G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox and gears that shift faster than normal and/or a misfire when you are in gear. It is possible that your sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you notice any of these signs. The good thing is that they are very affordable and easy to find particularly in the case of the Bosch unit like ours. Alternately, the GM version of this unit is also a great option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be a cause for many issues with your vehicle. You can test the sensor for any failure by checking the continuity between it and the tachometer. You can also check continuity between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection via pin T6a/1 (trace [79trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should detect an average resistance of 1000 ohms between these two points.
