Upgrades can boost the value of weapons, armors and rings. Upgrades also increase bonuses such as crit chance and PvE Damage.

Components

Upgrade components are items that can be put into weapons, armor, and trinkets to give a stat bonus or extra effect while they're in use. These can be obtained through crafting, buying from vendors, trading or looting. Some upgrades have special cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can only be used on equipment that has a slot. The item must be upgraded to blue level before a component can be used. In contrast to other mods components can only be used once; they can't be used multiple times or replaced with upgrades. Infusions and enrichments are a type of upgrade component that can be used to upgrade non-amulet legendary or ascending equipment, as other items that are not ascended. Infusions and enrichments can be retrieved by salvaging gear that is ascended or by completing an elite mission in the Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall campaigns.

A prefix or suffix may be added to an upgrade, changing the name of the item level upgrade it is applied to (for example 'Canthan Armor Insignia,' becomes Canthan Armor Minor Vigor). Some upgrades boost an item's Mark Level or Rarity, allowing players make stronger versions of the equipment that require fewer Upgrade Crystals than is required to achieve the same level of upgrade using normal methods.

A 'boost' upgrade can alter the attack or defence attributes of the weapon or armor. Once the player has completed the cutscene and defeated Crazed Mechanist, these upgrades can be made at the Portative Forging Station. These upgrades can be obtained by purchasing them in the cash shop or by getting them from enemies while upgrading other gear.

The player is able to have a maximum of five boost upgrades at one time; each Upgrade Item increases the chance that a higher-level version of the item will appear at the time of the next reset. This gives the player some incentive to keep upgrading their gear even if they're uncertain of how much they'll improve after a future reset.

The process of upgrading an item can be costly and it is likely that the item will be obsolete, or even break, if the upgrade fails. Upgrade Crystals and assist powders are also destroyed when the upgrade fails. Cash shop items can be used to minimize or eliminate the risk of failure. Certain upgrades also provide an additional bonus when reinserted.

Glyphs

Glyphs are upgrade parts that can be inserted into special sockets on the Paragon Board. Glyphs boost the power of nodes within a radius, including any existing affixes. Glyphs can be upgraded various ways, and we suggest upgrading them to 15 levels as soon as possible.

In the endgame, you will often find that the most effective way to upgrade your equipment is to use Glyphs. These are the only upgrade component which can be upgraded to level 15 and offer a significant boost to your power on the Paragon Board.

The majority of upgrades in the game can be replaced, but Glyphs are the only upgrade component that can be removed and re-placed without restriction. The only exception is legendary equipment that requires a Black Lion Salvage Kit to salvage and replace.

Each Glyph has a specific range of values it can improve a statistic by, and the value is shown when you choose the Glyph in your inventory. You can replace it with a different Glyph of the same rank, or a higher rank, which will increase the overall value of the glyph.

Glyphs are available in the Black Lion Trading Post as part of the Gem Store bundle or purchase them with certain tools that are unlimited in use as well as during Faction Crypt Raids. Every Faction Crypt can drop one of these Glyphs. There are some rare glyphs you can find in any of the Faction Crypts.

After you have acquired the desired Glyphs you'll require them to be placed on your equipment. Each Glyph unlocks a bonus that boosts the stats of a specific set of nodes within a radius around the Glyph. Based on the Glyph, this will either be +40 to one of your primary stats, or +25 to two of your secondary stats.

Using a Glyph can boost all nodes that are connected to it, so you should aim to place your Glyphs near the most important nodes of the Graph to maximise the impact. Druids for instance should position their Glyphs close to their primary damage nodes. They might also want to consider placing them near their critical damage nodes.

Leveling

The upgrade system of items allows players to increase the effectiveness of certain items by inserting upgraded components. This is referred to as "upping". Every upgradeable item has a level that determines its final upgraded stats. Upgraded items can be leveled up to a maximum level of 385. Each item level requires various components, and upgrade costs increase with each level.

Certain upgrades require an ingredient to be activated. This ingredient can be obtained by making Upgrade Recipes. These recipes can be purchased from NPCs or found on the upgrade tab of a crafting table. Each Upgrade Recipe that is completed will result in a certain amount of Technology points. These points can be used for the upgrading of an item. When enough points have been earned you'll be eligible to claim the upgrade and receive its additional bonuses.

When the player upgrades an item to a higher level, the original item is replaced by a new item of the same kind. This means that the same armor piece will become an weapon or shield once upgraded. The new item will have a unique bonus. This could be a drawback in that it could cause the item to become more expensive, even if you don't need it.

The upgrades to items can be rerolled, if the player has enough reroll tokens in order to do this. This causes the item to be traded for a new one, with a level 1 base and a totally different set of extra bonuses. This can be beneficial however it shouldn't be done often as it could waste resources.

Certain upgrades can increase their value and allow players to modify their gear. A good example of this is Dolphin's Gift, which gives a buff when the player is repeatedly in and out of the water (or does not swim as a dolphin).
