Upgrades increase the value of certain numeric statistics on armor, weapons and rings. Upgrades also increase bonuses such as Crit chance and damage from PvE.

The cost of upgrading an item is determined by the item's level. The cost increases as the level of the item increases.

Components

Upgrade components are items that can be slotted into armor, weapons, and trinkets to give an extra stat boost or impact while they're being used. They can be obtained by crafting, buying from vendors, trading or looting. Certain upgrades have unique cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can be inserted into any equipment that has a slot for them. The item must have been at a minimum upgraded to blue level to allow a component to be applied. Like other mods, upgrade components can only be used once; they cannot be applied repeatedly or replaced with new upgrades. Infusions and enrichments are a type of upgrade component that can be used to upgrade non-amulet legendary or ascended equipment, as well in some items that aren't ascended. Infusions and enrichments are recovered by salvaging gear from the ascended, or completing an elite mission in the Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall campaigns.

A prefix or suffix can be added to an upgrade, which alters the name of the item upgrader mod it is used on (for instance, 'Canthan Armor Insignia',' changes to Canthan Armor Minor Vigor). Certain upgrades can increase the Mark Rarity or Level of an item, allowing players to create stronger versions of the item using fewer upgrade crystals than they require to achieve the same level with normal methods.

A 'boost upgrade' can modify the attack or defense properties of a weapon, or armor. Glyphs will boost all nodes that are connected to them, which is why it is best to place Glyphs in the most important locations on the Graph. This will maximize the impact. For example, a Druid should aim to place their Glyphs near their primary damage nodes, but also be sure to place them near the most critical damage nodes too.

Leveling

The item upgrade system allows players to increase the power of certain items by introducing upgraded components. This is referred to as "upping". When the player improves a piece of equipment the original item will be replaced with a new item. This means that the same piece of armor will be transformed into an weapon or shield once upgraded. The new item will also come with a bonus of its own. This could be a disadvantage in that the item could be more expensive even if you do not need it.

If the player has enough tokens, they can reroll item upgrades. This causes the item to be exchanged for a new one, which will come with an initial level and a completely different set of extra bonuses. This can be useful, but shouldn't be done often as it can be a waste of resources.

Certain upgrades can be rerolled several times to increase their value, allowing the player to customize their gear.
