Path of Exile Item Upgrades

The performance of many Path of Exile items can be enhanced by upgrading them. They can provide extra damage, AD or even affixes.

Rare-grade equipment is often superior to modernized Common or Magic gear due to their high demands.

Armor

Armor upgrades are a type of upgrade that can be applied to weapon and armor items. They increase the effectiveness of the Item upgrader mod they are attached to. Upgrades to armor can be found in the world of games and are available from Blacksmiths on bonfires. Additionally, they can be salvaged from items with upgrade components within them by with a professional or higher salvage kit.

The amount of damage that an armored piece or weapon can absorb depends on the extent of its upgrades. The absorption of damage by an item of armor will increase as it is upgraded to the maximum upgrade level. It is important to note that this will increase the weight of the armor, which means it must be more heavy.

There are many different kinds of armor upgrade items available in the game. Each has a different impact. For example, some upgrades will grant the armor a certain amount of health points while others make it lighter and stronger. The name of the upgrade will indicate the kind of upgrade that an item will be given, as illustrated below.

Some upgrades also feature magic or a hybrid of technology and magic, which is identified by a "Magic" or "Hybrid" entry in the table below. Some upgrades also require a charge to use, which is shown by an "Charges" entry in the table below. These charges are constantly updated or never expire depending on the upgrade.

The cheapest way to upgrade armor is to use Iron Ore, which can be obtained by exploring the area and looting small loot chests. Titanium is more expensive however, it is available in the smelters of Orgrimmar and Stormwind City. Some upgrades, such as the Reforge and the Hot Potato Books, can only be applied to high-level armor pieces. These upgrades can provide significant improvement in stats and are worth the investment, particularly for one-handed weapons.

The player must be aware, however, that upgrading a piece to the maximum upgrade level can increase its defense value. However, it can also reduce its agility and speed. This is why it is not recommended to upgrade most armor pieces that are higher than +9 since the added defense is usually not worth the weight and power costs of the improvements required.

Weapons

Weapon upgrades allow players to enhance certain aspects of their weapon. For instance, an upgrade may increase the damage dealt by shotgun shells or the accuracy of a rifle sniper. Certain firearms also have upgrades that enhance their inherent qualities. Frictionless materials (improves stability, and reduces the risk of overheating), and Kinetic coils (increases the projectile's speed for greater damage) are two examples.

The majority of weapon upgrades require a whetblade. It's one of three Power Dices and a different amount of Minerals and Erons. They can be obtained by finishing side quests, taking out a certain number of monsters or bosses, or by contacting the Weapon Upgrade NPC in Central Flarine.

Upgrades to a weapon, equipment Set piece, or Whetblade requires visiting the NPC [Armor] Boboko in Central Flarine and paying her an upgrade cost that is based on a specific number of Bars. The more bars you need to complete an upgrade the higher the level. The cost of the upgrades will be lower if have more than one of the upgrade materials.

In Chapter 2: Season 5, the method of upgrading your equipment and weapon sets changed a little. Before you could search for an Upgrade Bench and pay a certain number of Bars to upgrade your equipment or weapon to an increased rarity. You could do this until the weapon or equipment reached its maximum upgrade level and at that point, the upgrades would reset.

You can still do this but the process is high on RNG and low on agency. Instead, you're better off going to the stores and purchasing equipment that has low upgrade item levels but good base scores and stat distributions. These gears have a higher chance of granting you the most prestigious tier of benefits and blessings.

To level up faster, most players will be more inclined to upgrade their weapons. Players should also upgrade the weapons that their squadmates utilize to increase their power. Shepard for instance should upgrade his M92F so that he can unlock the Beretta M93R. This will increase the effectiveness of the weapon when accompanied with biotic specialists such as Grunt and Tali.

Jewels

Jewels can be used to boost a stat or provide secondary effects in armor and weapons. They can be created using the process of jewelry crafting, in which you combine a gem with several reagents at a jewelry table. The higher the tier of the gem is, the greater its secondary effect. These reagents can be obtained around the world from Treasure Goblins, World Bosses and occasionally by salvaging Legendary gear. You can also purchase them from The Jeweler for gold and a Scattered Prism.

The Jeweler can boost the quality of the gem in stages that range from Crude up to Royal. Based on the tier of the jewel it can provide different stat boost when slotted into gear, weapons and jewelry.

The Jeweler is able to create all tiers of gems, except for the rare and legendary ones, which you must be at an appropriate level to obtain. Jewels can be replaced by another jewel without damaging the original. You are able to replace the jewel once within an item of equipment.

Using more jewels in a move will make it more smooth, and is often used for aesthetic reasons. The jewels can also enhance performance and create a harder surface than steel, so that the repeated friction from pivots do not damage them.

A Glyphmaster can offer glyphs to improve the appearance of your weapons and shields. These glyphs give a slight boost and can be swapped, but they're not guaranteed to be available as loot. Glyphs, just like jewelry, can be upgraded at the Jeweler in exchange for Scattered Crystals and gold. Glyphs can also be taken out from the inventory, and they are returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components, like traits and aegis, aren't swappable and can only be recovered using an Upgrade Extractor or salvaging them with a Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool.

Trinkets

Trinkets are a great way to provide your hero with a variety of small, but beneficial, advantages. They are available in the starting area as loot or as personal story rewards. They can also be obtained from vendors and by doing road interaction. They can also be made by jewelers, and then found or purchased at the Trading Post.

The first trinket that a player can unlock is the cloak. It grants a small but valuable boost in movement speed and the ability to escape. The player can then acquire necklaces, rings, and amulets in a similar fashion similar to how they obtained weapons and armor. Each piece of equipment has one upgrade slot that accepts either a universal or a jewel upgrade. Universal upgrades are smaller and can be used on any equipment. Jewels are not upgradeable or replaced and are only compatible with certain trinkets.

These trinkets also provide additional buffs and skills that are active even when the character is not fighting. This enables the hero to be more effective when not active, and can also help fill in the void of a strong team or the absence of any talent tree slots that would normally be filled with the hero's best statistics.

As a rule trinket upgrades should be a priority BiS (Best in Slot) items that you aren't likely to replace soon. Also, consider items with desirable stats that are less significant than the iLevel for the item upgrading that is to be upgraded. This is especially true when an item upgrader has multiple stats that you'd like to upgrade, as it's often better to upgrade just one important stat than two sub-optimal ones.

Jungle players often upgrade their yellow trinket to a red one at the start of the game. Mid and top players however they will select either a pink or green ward, depending on the game's matchup. These choices can impact the hero's ability to manage the map.

In addition to the items mentioned above, players will find other trinkets in the form trophies and rewards throughout the game. They can be earned through completing certain milestones in the story, for instance the main quest of a chapter or killing a certain boss. You can check them out by selecting the achievement in the reward section of the hero's menu.
