Choosing uPVC Replacement Window Handles

Window handles are a fundamental part of uPVC frames and should match the frame that is currently in use. The most important thing is the spindle length, which determines whether your new uPVC handle will fit.

See the table below for a quick checklist when measuring your uPVC window handle's spindle. This will ensure you order the right replacement window handle for your double-glazed window.

Espag Handle

Espag handles are the most commonly used design of handle used on windows made of Upvc (they're often found in timber and aluminium too). The handles have a square spindle which extends from the handle's back and locks into the multi-point locking mechanism that is on the window. The handle is used to control the locking system around the changing window handles.

Window handles from Espag come in many different styles and functions. Some have a push button for a locked closed position, and key-locking. (And nonlocking for fire escape when required.) Many of them meet the Secure by Design specification to provide an extra level of security. They also come with different sizes of spindles that can be adjusted by using spindle sleeves to reduce the size of the protruding spindles.

Yale has examined the espagnolette handles we provide to ensure that they meet all the standards you'd expect. They work with windows made of upvc as well as timber windows and aluminium frames. We offer a variety of colors and match the handle with your hinges.

Another important feature of handles made from espagnolette is their step height. This is the distance from the top of the handle up to where it sits on the frame, and it's essential to ensure it's in order to ensure a secure and tight fit. The majority of our handles are 43mm apart between the screw hole centres, which is the industry standard.

Like other types of window handles of handles you can choose between straight and cranked designs. Cranked handles can be used in situations where the espagnolette handle is located close to the frame's edge. They provide more space to open up the window.

Our range of upvc replacement handles features a wide variety of finishes, styles and colours to suit your home's decor, including polished chrome, antique brass and satin nickel. Some of our handles come with soft-close technology to lessen the sound that windows create when they close.

Cockspur Handle

The Cockspur Window Handle is a handle made specifically for the fabricator who wishes to provide their customers a stylish and durable design. These handles can be used with uPVC windows or aluminium frames. They function by using a spur that locks over the frame's edge to secure the window. The window handle is locked so that it only opens when pushed. This adds additional security. The handle comes in five different finishes, both left and right handed versions. This allows fabricators to cater for more windows.

These cockspur window handles are equipped with three packing pieces with different thickness, allowing them to be adjusted to a broad range of backset sizes. Each piece fits snugly beneath the handle's nose and can be removed or added to the size of the step in order to create a different backset which ranges from 9mm up to 21mm. The handle comes in left and right handed versions, with straight or curved nose options.

When looking for a replacement for your current cockspur handles, it's important to measure the current handle height to ensure that the new handle is appropriate for the position. A wrong handle can cause a range of issues, including the inability of the window to close. This can be a problem for homeowners and cause unnecessary stress.

A cockspur handle is found on older uPVC or timber windows. The handles do not come with any integrated window locks, unlike the Espag handles that are found on modern windows. They come with a shootbolt or Espagnolette bar lock.

The espagnolette handle (often abbreviated as 'espag" or "espag") is the most commonly used handle used on new uPVC Casement Windows. The Yale Encloser locking mechanism is activated when you turn the espagnolette handles. This is a lot safer than a traditional cockspur handle or the standard British handle. This is because when you turn the handle of the espagnolette it turns several locks inside the window frame to secure it.

Handle by turning and tilting

These windows are popular with people who want to increase ventilation in their home while also adding a level of security. Like the name suggests, they come with a turn and tilt function that lets the window open at 90 degrees, giving an opening of a smaller size or to drop down into a hopper style to provide full airflow. The dual function makes them look attractive that can really add to the wow factor of double-glazed windows.

Tilt and turn windows tend to be more complex compared to other styles of double glazed windows, which increases the cost since they require more components and a lot of labor during installation. These windows are worth the investment as they can add value and provide numerous advantages to your home.

The main benefit of these ladders is that you can clean your windows without using external ladders. This is particularly beneficial for those who live in high-rise flats or buildings, since it eliminates the need to take a risk of falling from an elevated position. Tilt and turn windows also offer added security as windows are locked when in a tilted position which means that intruders who want to get inside cannot open them from inside.

Most often, you'll see handles like this often on European style windows, specifically those in Germany However, you can also get them installed in UK homes. The uPVC replacement handle is normally made of a spindle and is fitted with 7mm square spindles which is typically found in lengths of 32mm, 38mm or 44mm. The handle's base is also more wide than most handles which is why they are known as a 'tilt safe' window handle as it can only be rotated to open the windows after it has been locked in either the closed or tilt position.

If you want to replace the uPVC tilt and turn window handle you must first remove the existing handle from the window by using an screwdriver. The screws are usually concealed behind a backplate with a spring loaded. Simply lift the backplate and twist it until you can see two screw holes. Using a ruler or tape measure you can determine the distance between these two screw holes that is typically 43mm centre to center. Once you've got the measurement you can then order the right handle size to be a perfect fit for your uPVC windows.
