Honeycomb is a delicious miracle of nature created by honeybees. It is a perfectly organized hexagonal structure constructed from natural beeswax, and is among the most useful components of the hive. Honeycomb structures today have numerous scientific and engineering applications.

The honeycomb hive serves three reasons: an area for the new bees to nest as well as a place to store pollen until it turns into "bee bread," and a long-term location for the hive's reserve of nectar. When a beehive is swarming it, the bees begin an entirely new hive, with a fresh honeycomb foundation.

Bees create honeycombs by using their flight muscles to produce heat, which softens the beeswax plates they secrete from their abdomens. They then form the softened wax into cylinder shapes and connect them to cells adjacent on either side. This arrangement is highly constant, indicating that it is not merely the result of random physical forces, but rather a highly well-organized pattern of construction behavior. This is also an example of convergent evolutionary change - when a similar feature appears independently in closely related species.
