Item upgrades are a way to boost the stats of an item. Depending on the type of upgrade you choose, it may increase the rarity of an item, or its Mark Level, and also boost other stats.
Upgrading equipment in The War Within requires a set number of Flightstones and Crests, and each item has an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the cost of the next item by a specific amount.
Item Level
When an item is upgraded, its basic stats increase in value. This value is the sum of all of the perks that are leveled up (attack magic attack and defense). Upgrades can be expensive, depending on who you hire and what you do. This is due to how many perks have to be replaced in order for the item to be upgraded.
It can also be used as a gating requirement when queueing for raids, dungeons and scenarios. It also serves as a gating requirement when waiting to queue for dungeons and scenarios, and raids, as well as to limit the amount of PvP gear a player can wear (since PvP is limited to a lower level). The average level of the item can be found in the character sheet.
When deciding whether to purchase or sell equipment players can evaluate the level of an item. It's a sign of the item's damage and its quality. Comparing items in the inventory of a seller can be done by using the item level.
The level of the item can be seen by pressing the ALT key on your PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will display the Best item upgrader's full description, including ilvl. It can also be found by hovering over an item with the mouse cursor and typing /itemlevel into chat.
There are various theories on how the calculation of the item's level is carried out. One theory is that the level is a number that comes from a formula which calculates the amount an item's stats are worth. It takes into consideration that different perks are valued differently, and that gems found in sockets increase the value of the item. This process can result in a calculated value for the item's level, which is usually close to Blizzard's actual level of the item.
This is not the only factor that influences the level of an Best item upgrade. The degree of the area in which the item was dropped may alter its stats. For instance it can increase the item's haste or crit score. Items dropped in higher-level instances will have higher ilvl.
Item Stats
Item stats can be the difference between a good or bad item for players. The game uses them in many ways to encourage players not to limit themselves to one weapon and to motivate players to explore other weapons. The base stats on a weapon are increased by the weapon's stat mods, which are themselves boosted by the player's level.
Item upgrades add to that by increasing certain stats on the item. The costs for upgrades are determined by the rarity of the item. A white or grey item for instance, can only be upgraded one time and items with rare tiers may be upgraded multiple times with higher costs.
Another way to change the stats on an item is to use affixes. These are special stat boosts that can be added to an item by the player and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Affixes are used to give items additional damage or special abilities (such as the ability to revive dead or reduce cooling downs) or to make them unique by putting a name on them.
All affixes are currently re-rolled by selecting them in the upgrade menu pressing the green button. This procedure will cost the player a specific amount of gold and other items, which can be used to add to the upgrade gauge in the same way as the other options for rerolling.
Players can choose to upgrade an item by specific stats or reroll affixes. The stat ranges are determined by the item upgrader mod's level. However, all items will have at least one stat within the same range, unless it's a unique item, or a God Roll from a boss in a raid.
This is another thing that can be modified by adding an option to upgrade the equipment without rerolling the affixes, or selecting which stats to boost. Like the base equipment, it will have to be done per item, and the interface for item comparison wouldn't display all possible stats simultaneously.
Item Luck
The Luck stat of a player can increase the chance of finding items and the properties that are created by loot and the intensity of these properties. However, it doesn't directly affect damage or ability to upgrade items. It gives players the chance to upgrade their equipment earlier in the game. This is particularly useful for early game runs, because players tend to put the scaling of weapons and defenses over raw damage gains.
Luck can also increase the chance of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This should not be confused with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade probability, which increases with each level and can be further increased by using an anti-material, such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.
The shields, armor and weapons come with an initial Luck value of 40. These items can then be enhanced with golden ingots, spined leather or oak boards (depending on the material of the item) to grant an additional +40 Luck or to boost the existing Luck of the item up to 140.
Certain items, like the weapon with Hollow-infused components, can also be equipped to increase the damage of any ability that is able to deal damage by five percent. These items are available in the shops or made by using the appropriate ingredients.
Item Failure
Upgrades to items can be costly and not all upgrades will succeed. However, there are some cash shop items that allow players to increase their success rate or prevent themselves from losing an item in the event that the upgrade is unsuccessful.
The rate of success of an upgrade is shown in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the likelihood of successful upgrading an item. This can be increased by using Additional Materials or Special materials. The probability of success can only be increased by so high, and the probability that an upgrade will fail cannot exceed 100%.
The Luck of an item may influence the effectiveness of an upgrade. Every item has an average success rate of 25%, and each item with Luck increases the chance of success by five percent.
It is important to note that upgrade items are rendered above the inventory items therefore enchantment glints and other effects may be masked by the overlays. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
