Which Lightweight Double Pushchair Should You Buy?
A lightweight double pushchair is easy to get around, particularly for families with children of various ages. They're typically simple to fold, steer, and carry up and down stairs.
This City Mini GT2 features side-by-side seating with plenty of legroom. It also has adjustable reclining, UPF 50+ canopies and peekaboo windows. It also comes with a smart frame that can be expanded to accommodate a second car seat and a compatible car seat(s).
Side-by-Side
The majority of the lightweight double pushchairs that we test are side-byside models and are generally recommended for children who can sit up on their own since these models aren't equipped with car seat integration. That said there are some exceptions. Thule Urban Glide 2 Double and Baby Trend Sit 'N Stand double buggy travel system are both top choices that have recline that can be adjusted in both seats, a wide canopy, and padded 5-point harnesses. They're also easy to move despite their larger footprints and are great for parents who are worried about fitting through doorways.
The Cybex Duet pushchair is unique because it features a unique frame that expands in width to accommodate another child seat. This makes it slimmer than other pushchairs that are side-by-side. It can be pushed through doors that are standard and is easy to maneuver on public transportation. It also doubles as a jogger which is great news when you're planning to use it with a baby carrier or infant car seat, and comes in a range of fun colors.
Another fantastic side-by-side light double is the UPPAbaby Vista v2 Double, that offers more flexibility and customization thanks to its modular frame. It's a clever design that allows you to convert it into a single buggy or a double with the addition of two car seats or carrycots (it can even take twins). It's a great option for growing families, and the UPPAbaby also makes one of the lightest and most stylish umbrella strollers double available.
Try the egg2, which can be folded down to the size and weight of a compact suitcase. It can be used either as a single or double by adding two carrycots or baby car seats. Our home testers were amazed by the ease of maneuver, even with a full load of kids.
Even though they are lightweight double pushchairs that sit side-by-side are not foolproof. If your children are of the same age and stage, they could still argue over who gets to sit in which position. And if they're at different heights, a tandem model could be more suitable for them since it lets them confront each other.
Tandem
While side-byside models might be more appropriate for siblings who are the same age tandem pushchairs that are lightweight are a different kind of pushchair with their own appeal. Some can fit carseats that are larger, and some have seats that can be reversible. Others have an additional carrycot or reversible seat in the middle. They tend to be more spacious and easy to get in and out of however their baskets are typically smaller than those on single buggies. They often have larger sized canopies with peekaboo windows as well as a cup holder for the parent and padding for the legs of young children.
The iCandy Peach tandem is another excellent example of a light tandem that provides an excellent value. The fabrics are a little less expensive than some of our top-rated doubles. However, it looks fantastic and is simple to use. One of the most striking things about it is the one-handed fold. Although it will require some practice, Kirstie in our Lab has said it's "genius". The carrycot cannot be folded while it's attached. However, the process to attach and remove the carrycot is easy and quick.
Tandem double pushchairs are light and lightweight. They generally make more precise turns than side-by-side models, however, they can be more challenging to drive over bumps and uneven surfaces. They can also be slower to accelerate and are heavier to move. This can put strain on your back.
A convertible double buggy is another option. It is initially a single, but you can add adapters to convert it into a double. These can include a second seat or carrycot in the front or children can be seated side-by-side. Some may have the option of including a buggyboard, which assists an older child to keep pace with a younger brother or sister.
The Uppababy Vista V2 can be transformed into a twin pushchairs-sized stroller by purchasing additional cocoons for PS59 each. These cocoons provide an open space for infants. They can be placed side by side or attached to face each other and you can also use them with the baby car seat that is included with the pushchair (as as long as you select the right one). Because they're made from high-quality materials, these dual-use buggies can often be used for years without displaying much wear, meaning they have the highest potential for resale.
Single-to-double stroller with Bassinet
Ideal for families who love to be outdoors and are looking to upgrade their single stroller, this lightweight double buggy turns into a jogger thanks to an impressive kit that comes with air-filled tyres and all-wheel suspension. It is also a good choice for twins, or children from different ages and, as a triple tandem, it can handle rough terrain. It's a great option for parents who want a stylish design as sleek as a single and is available in a variety of colors.
We loved the way this iCandy model folds down using a single-hand mechanism that's very easy to master. It's also heavier than some of the other single-to-double pushchairs featured in this review, our home tester Karolina stated that it feels extremely maneuverable, even when she had two toddlers and a carrycot in it.
You can buy add-ons like the Roma Gemini Carrycots (PS100) that are ideal for infants. The seats are comfortable for toddlers and come with good headrests and lumbar support. There are a variety of options for recline, with the front seat adjusting to various positions and the rear seat offering a recline option.
This type of buggy has the biggest disadvantage of being larger than doubles that are side-by-side. This makes it difficult to maneuver through doorways and it can be difficult to get up and down kerbs. However the suspension and wheels on these models generally perform well in handling paved surfaces, and the fact that they're usually much lighter than some of the side-by-sides means you can still find plenty of storage space. These strollers aren't easy to maneuver around supermarkets with narrow aisles and they can be difficult to carry a large amount. It's easier to turn around even on the smallest of curving paths however, even this can be a challenge. Some are more easy to turn than other, such as the thule double stroller Urban Glide 2 Double or Baby Trend Sit N' Stand Double.
Convertible
Convertible double pushchairs are great because they can be adjusted to the changing needs of a family. They are typically single buggies, and come with adapters that allow you to include a second child's seat or a carrycot (in some cases) an automobile seat to the frame. Some are able to be converted to a single buggie when your child reaches the age of walk or wants to ride buggyboards.
One of the lightest double buggy with carrycot strollers we have on our list, this fashionable tri-fold model can carry children up to 40lbs each and features a convenient basket that can be placed between the seats for storage. Home users loved its large canopy with windows that peek out multi-position reclining seats, as well as front and rear suspensions for smoother rides on rough terrain. It also comes with a handy cup holder for parents and an ample, easy-to-access basket. However, they noticed that the backs of the seats have tiny pockets that are not big enough to accommodate anything more than a phone and keys.
This lightweight, high-end side-by-side is available in more than 20 different configurations. It also comes with a second chair and carrycot. It has a high-profile steering handlebar, rear and front suspensions to smooth rough terrain and a compact fold that can stand on its own with straps for easy transport, and seven-inch front wheels with swivel locks as well as 10 inches back wheels with suspensions for more comfortable riding. The only downside is that you will need to purchase an additional car seat or baby carrier.
This versatile tandem is the most popular of our home testers because it is easy to maneuver and comes with a large basket for shopping that can be accessed from both seats when they are in the parent-facing positions. It is a breeze to maneuver due to its light weight (about the equivalent of some single pushchairs). Reversible seats mean you can flip them to face either way, and the clever method by which it can attach an additional seat or riding board to the rear is appreciated by many. Parents also appreciated the fact that it can accommodate infant carriers and car seats from various brands. This includes those that aren't normally compatible with other double buggies.
