A robot vacuum can keep your floors tidy enough to cut down on the frequency of manual hoovering. Pick a robot vacuum that has good navigation, can clean stairs and corners and also has large bins that needs to be emptying every so often.

You can also find models that can mop and charge themselves, a feature that may be essential for those who have pets or kids. Many of the top performers in our tests offer decent obstacle-avoiding capabilities.

1. iRobot Roomba i3+ EVO

The i3+ EVO is similar to its sibling i3 EVO. They differ only in the fact that the i3+ has self-emptying capabilities. The i3+ is a great alternative for those who want a a fully automated, hands-off cleaning robots for home experience but are willing to manually empty the dust bin after it has filled up.

Both robots are adept at removing surface dirt on carpets and hard floors and are able to navigate around furniture and other obstacles. iAdapt navigation software makes a smart maps of your home that assist the i3+ to navigate and clean up efficiently. However, unlike the i7+ and other top-rated robots we tested the i3+ doesn't have any obstacle-avoidance features, so it may get stuck on things like socks or power cords and it may have trouble navigating across surface transitions, such as from hardwood to rug.

iRobot suggests that you clean the area in which the i3+ EVO vacuums prior to using it. This includes getting rid of any toys or other clutter it might come across. It's also recommended to keep the dust bin and filter clear so they don't become clogged with dirt. If the i3+ EVO's internal bin is full or the battery is empty, it returns to its docking station and automatically empties its dirt into the station's external dustbin, and then continues cleaning where it began. The i3+ EVO's batteries last for about an hour and a half of continuous use. It takes around three hours to fully recharge.

2. iRobot Roomba i7+

The iRobot i7+ is an excellent model from iRobot's flagship line and comes with the most recent features. It is self-charging and self-navigating, but the most significant feature is the self-emptying bin. This will eliminate the need for regular maintenance.

The Roomba I7+ is able to better map rooms with Imprint Smart Mapping. It also works with the iRobot Home app to let you schedule cleaning jobs and control your robot with voice or via the app.

The i7+ is quicker and more maneuverable in our tests compared to the eufy RoboVac G30. It also removed large pet hair pieces from any surface including carpeting. The biggest advantage over the Eufy is its self-emptying garbage bin which removes major maintenance sources and reduces recurring cost.

We were also impressed with the i7+'s compatibility with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant AI services. We used these services to instruct the robot on how to start, stop, or pause cleaning sessions as well as move around the room and even vacuum a specific area. The iRobot Home App made it easy to connect the i7+ with these services. After connecting, we were able to use the i7+'s voice commands like "Hey Alexa, vacuum the master bedroom." The iRobot Home App also offers options to manage i7+ settings and monitoring the performance.

3. Dyson Cyclone V10

This tiny Dyson model is an all-sports car that is amidst a sea of cordless vacuums that feel like minivans and buses. It's got the power and features to replace a stand-up vacuum in the majority of households, but it also fits in well next to a coffee table or on shelves where you can wave it around like a magic wand.

The V10 is powered by a 7-cell, high-energy lithium-ion battery that can provide fade-free power for 60 minutes. The sophisticated whole-machine filter system traps allergens, then lets cleaner air into your home. The cleaning head is specially designed to drive bristles made of nylon that are stiff into carpet to suck up large particles and fine dust. It comes with three suction settings to match the task that is being completed. It quickly switches from handheld vacuum to floor washing robot vacuum and back again.

The model comes with a dock that can charge the Dyson to 100 percent in 3.5 hours. It also gives an easy access to two attachments and an Wand. This is a major improvement over earlier Dysons which require a long charge and are difficult to store.

The main issue with the V10 is its limited running time. As CR's tests have shown, its claims to run up to 60 minutes are misleading. This is a common, not exceptional, battery-powered cordless vacuum's run time. That's still enough run time to get rid of the majority of a home that's average size but not long enough to clean every spot (though a second run-through usually will suffice). This model has its own advantages however: it's lighter and more maneuverable than earlier Dysons cordless models, and its vacuuming ability is noticeably superior for carpet floors with low pile.

4. iRobot Roomba 694

The 694 is a basic best buy robot vacuum vacuum that's a great choice for those who don't have lots of money to invest in an expensive robot. It was able to remove most types of debris in our tests, and frequently went over the same area several times to ensure a thorough clean. Its flat front makes it possible to reach the corners and edges of walls.

Its intelligent navigation system makes use of iAdapt to avoid obstacles and navigate around your home, but it's not equipped with the mapping capabilities of more sophisticated models like our top picks, the i3+ EVO and the j7+ series. This means that it is sometimes stuck on things like phone cords or furniture that isn't as sturdy, and frequently runs out of battery power before returning to its home base.

The Xiaomi Mi robot is superior in many ways to the Roomba 694 in that it has fewer components that require regular cleaning, is outfitted with an allergen-trapping HEPA filtration system, incurs lower costs for recurring expenses, is more sophisticated in its automation capabilities and is able to better navigate itself. It also has a bigger dustbin and is charged faster.

The eufy RoboVac X8 is superior to the Roomba 694 in most purposes, because it has a better battery life, has the ability to alter the suction power mode by hand and comes with physical boundary strips, and is controlled by your smartphone's voice assistant. It is also more durable, has a more powerful motor, and works better on both bare floors and carpets with low pile, while providing a wider array of automation options.

5. Samsung Jet Bot AI+

Samsung is a well-known brand in the field of home electronics. It's no surprise, then, that they are also among the top producers of robot vacuums and mop. Their Jet Bot AI+ is loaded with cutting-edge onboard intelligence technology to aid in navigation and obstacle avoidance.

The app gives you plenty of options to customize your robotic cleaner, such as virtual barriers mopping water levels, behavior adjustments, docking frequency settings, and more. The app is simple to use and understand similar to other Samsung devices.

In our tests, the Jet Bot AI+ performed well on hard floors, and it removed 86 percent of dog hair (on carpet). It did not do well in avoiding taller objects like cords or socks. This was disappointing. It's also more expensive than the other models we've tested, which might be a problem for some shoppers.

The smart vacuum has an onboard camera that can be accessed via the app, and you can also create a live stream from the robot hoover's cleaning station. This feature lets you keep track of your pets or kids when you're away from home. The filter and the dust bin can be washed to make cleanup quick and easy. The Jet Bot AI+ comes with a self-emptying clean station, which helps to keep the bin clean and maximizes suction power.

6. Black & Decker Robot Vacuum

In contrast to other robotic vacuums that are specifically designed for carpets and hard floors, Black and Decker robots are specifically designed for hard floors. The robots have an extra-wide cleaning path, and a dustbin that is 2X bigger than the competitors. This lets them clean the area for longer. They also have two side sweepers to clean along edges and corners. The POWERSERIES Extreme model comes with AutoSense technology, which senses the presence of surface litter or embedded dirt and then automatically adjusts its power level. It also comes with a smart app that lets you view the virtual map, and control functions and schedules. Additionally, you can track the battery's status and then return it to its dock to charge by pressing one button. The app also lets you to personalize the LED lights on top of the vacuum by using different colors, so you can clearly see which areas it's focused on or where it's got stuck.

The app also makes it easy to steer the robot manually should you need to. My living room rug for instance has a dark-colored border that could cause trouble for other robots. The HRV 425BL however, continued to move across the border without registering the high point. The ability to program a cleaning schedule for each week is a time-saving convenience.
