In addition to the stat increases certain upgrades can also provide a random boost. These secondary boosts can be extremely valuable and should be taken into consideration when deciding on which items to upgrade items. Certain boosts can only be used in specific builds (such the Whistan's Shield, which is for FB Sorcs) Some are valuable to collectors.
Certain items come with inherent boos that are less effective when upgraded, such as the Goldwrap which provides more slots for potion. These are often upp'd to increase the value of the perfect or nearly perfect item.
Costs
There are a few costs related to upgrades of items. The first is the cost of performing the upgrade. It can be costly and is contingent on the new ilvl of the item and the number of perks it gets. Upgrades to a higher level (such as Explorer to Champion or Veteran to Heroic) can be expensive.
The other is the cost of the materials required to upgrade. These are typically Power Dices (dropped from monsters 21+), Minerals and Erons, or specific Mists Of Pandaria or Warlords Of Draenor Quests. The quantity of these items required can be seen in the inventory of an upgrade vendor.
Upgrading an item is an intricate process that takes time. It can take up to 8 hours, depending on the size of the upgrade. The upgraded item's base stats are calculated by using the item's new ilvl bonuses, perks, and other properties. This calculation determines the latest Armor Class bonus, damage dice, and other important stats. In some instances an upgrade may grant additional benefits. These perks are listed in a list.
Rarely, the new benefits obtained will cost more than one perk slot to acquire; in these situations the upgrade will replace the perks with the highest cost. Sometimes, the upgrader will make other modifications to an item, such as changing its weapon damage type or adding or removing an unwieldy or operative property. These changes are based on an item's ilvl, and may require special materials, for instance adamantine.
Success Rate
The upgrade of an item is dependent on the chance. Like any random system, there is a possibility that it won't succeed. However there are a few things that can help to increase the odds of success. This includes the use of an Upgrade Pity or the addition additional materials to your upgrade.
The Upgrade Pity is available through the NPC for smithing in Lost Ark. It increases the odds of a successful upgrade by some percentage. It is similar to the luck bonus some items come with however it is more reliable. It can be added to any weapon or armor, and can be used up to three times.
It is also possible to add a number of additional materials to the upgrade, thereby increasing the chance of success. These are displayed in a separate window, above the + button. However, there are some limitations to this, and the highest amount of material that can be added is shown directly above the + button in the user interface.
A Blacksmith Blessing or an upgraded version thereof, can be used to boost the chances of an upgrade succeeding. This item is helpful if you have an item or weapon gear that has reached the maximum level for its tier or is close to it. This item lets you upgrade the equipment to the next level without risking its breaking.
If an upgrade is unsuccessful the upgrade will be reversed to its previous state. This is typically an error, but it can also be a downgrade. It is an excellent idea to save upgrades for when you are close to the maximum capacity of an item, and use it as a last resort.
