The upgrade system in World of Warcraft allows players to upgrade the quality of their equipment by spending currency at an Best Item Upgrader upgrader NPC. The item will keep the stats it had prior to upgrading, and will receive an additional bonus of its new base type. The bonus will be randomly chosen from the following categories: the chance to acquire weapons with a higher damage range, a chance to obtain an enhanced reload speed or the chance to obtain an improved defense roll.

The amount of upgrades you do will determine the amount of extras you will receive. Each upgrade will increase the number of extras by a maximum of 3 points. Each upgrade will also boost the main stats by +1.

Some upgrades also give you a secondary random boost in addition to stat boosts. These boosts are valuable and should be considered when deciding what items to upgrade. Some of these boosts can only be used in specific designs (such a Whistan's Shield for FB Sorcs), while others are valuable to collectors.

Certain items come with inherent boo, which is not useful when upgraded, such as the Goldwrap which provides additional slots for potion. These are often upgraded to add value to a close-to-perfect or perfect item upgrading.

Costs

Upgrades have certain costs associated with them. The most significant cost is the upgrade itself. This cost can be expensive and is dependent on the new level of the item as well as the number of perks it receives. It can also be costly to upgrade an item upgrades to a higher level (such as Explorer > Champion or Veteran > Heroic).

The other is the cost of the materials required for an upgrade. The items used are typically either Power Dices (dropped by monsters 21and up) or Minerals and Erons (obtainable by completing specific Mists of Pandaria or Warlords of Draenor quests). It takes time to upgrade an item. It can take 8 hours depending on the size of the upgrade. The upgraded item's base stats are calculated based on the new ilvl of the item bonuses, perks, and other properties. This calculation determines the new Armor Class bonuses, damage dice, and other important stats. In certain cases the upgrade can grant additional benefits that can be chosen from a list of perks.

Rarely, the benefits gained will cost more than one perk slot to acquire; in these situations, the upgrade will only replace the highest-cost perks. The upgrader may also make other modifications to the item, such as changing the damage type of its weapon or removing a operative or unwieldy feature. These modifications are based on an item upgrader mod's ilvl and may require special materials, for instance adamantine.
